Charleston is quite simply a stunning city to visit and we so wish we could afford / it was practicable to live here. The architecture is a little similar to Savannah but there seems to be a lot more money here. The house in the downtown historic quarter must take a lot of maintenance but they are absolutely immaculate.
We spent 2 days here and first visited the ‘Visitors Centre’ which is really well done and housed in the old railway station .. from here we simply ambled ……….. It was Memorial Day weekend and the Spoleto Festival so there was lots to see ………. Looked around the art exhibition in the park, listened to a German oompah band and just soaked up the atmosphere.
Next day we visited Fort Sumter which saw the opening shot of the Civil War here. A very interesting and informative 4 hours. After the boat trip to the Fort our appetites had been sparked so we headed towards what looked to be a very popular BBQ place …………….my G*d the sandwiches were HUGE !!!! I had a BBQ pulled Pork sandwich on sourdough with south fries and Emma had a BBQ platter and although we ate them (because they were sooooooooo good) we suffered for the next few hours loosening our belts several times.
Following this lardy late lunch / dinner we headed off 60 miles up the coast to Huntington Beach State Park.
