CHESAPEAKE VA TO YORKTOWN (CHIPPOKES PLANTATION STATE PARK VA)

Found a lovely family run campground on a huge ranch with a really great antiques store …… bliss!

Next morning headed off to historic Yorktown which was the last significant battle of the American / French War and the site of the surrender of Cornwalis’ British / Hessian Army.

It was somewhat depressing to visit the site of the signing of the terms of surrender but we were lucky enough to be the sole visitors and were given a very informative and comprehensive background to the conflict.

We had not realised that there were more French troops fighting than there were American, no r that the battle turned upon the French Naval superiority which was able to repulse the re-enforcements sent by sea.

The town of Yorktown itself is VERY cutesy ….. immaculately kept and closed in some sections to traffic. Surprisingly there seemed to be few visitors in the town / village itself but the reason became apparent later ……

they were all on the beach which we found whilst strolling.
Moved on to our stop for the night which we hoped would be able to accommodate us by taking a ferry across from Jamestown to Scotland. Following which, a short drive got us to the State Park of Chippokes.
