SUKHOTHAI

After two weeks in Chiang Mai we decided it was time to head South so caught the bus to the ancient (and original) capital of Thailand - Sukhotai. Very different feel in Sukhothai .... much more of a provincial town. Settled into our wooden chalet which was simple but lovely and set in nice gardens .... had a wrap around deck just made for drinking beer on and relaxing after a hard days sight seeing!
The town itself was pretty non-descript but it did have a great Tuesday night market for the locals ...... interesting to see the locals snacking on deep fried grubs and crickets!
Headed out to Old Sukhothai which is where all the historic sights are based and hired bicyles on our second day visit to the site to explore the outer ruins. Very well maintained sites and totally deserted outside of the main centre (which is where the tour buses disgorge their occupants).
The influence of early Hinduism is apparent in a few of the buildings and it's great to see how the buildings were later adapted to suit the new religeon of Buddhism.
